Marimo (2005)

Artwork for Japanese BluRay Release
I'm gonna piss off a lot of dog and silent film lovers with this review but whatever:  Suck it up!

The film itself is beautiful.  And for all intents and purpose, the first third of the short film is gorgeous and moving, even without the haunting and ironic music choice.  But the second and third part really only pander to a specific group of viewers, which, considering the short film was a part of a larger collection of films about dogs, All About My Dog (2005), should come as no surprise.

The short film, available on YouTube, has lit up the interweb's meme-sphere, but then again, so have hilariously illiterate cats, and that should say something.

But on that subject I'll stay mute.

As far as the film though.

Whereas the first part is the stronger and more touching part, the film as a whole is pretty even.  It is after all a simple film, with hints of silent film aesthetics, and here I don't mean just because of the intertitles.  I must also exclaim that I by no means intend to imply that silent films are simple, quite the opposite.

So please no hate mail.
Still from Film

It has a simple structure that relies on the intertitles as narrative tool, while giving the images a floaty sort of dreamy feeling.  Unlike yesterday's movie, Closer (2004), this film smacks you in the face with forward time movement, giving the whole film a fragmented feel that I believe is exactly what the filmmaker wanted, whether you like it or not.

I don't.

Like it that is.

If you have the ten minutes then proceed to watch this, just don't expect to be blown away, although a lot of the shots will do just that.

Just be warned, the song will stick with you, and you will find yourself humming away the soundtrack to your life, in the key of bark minor.

Comment as you see fit.
